Is a Blocked Toilet an Emergency? A Plain Answer

By Blocked Drains in Aldershot ·

Quick answer

A single blocked toilet is usually not an emergency. If the water drains slowly and every other drain still works, a careful plunge is a fair first step. It becomes urgent when sewage comes up inside the house, when more than one fixture is affected, or when the bowl keeps rising towards the rim.

When a blocked toilet can be handled calmly

Many blocked toilets are a local problem. For instance, the bowl fills, the water drops slowly, and the rest of the house works as normal. In that case the blockage is probably in the toilet or the short pipe just beyond it.

Thames Water gives a useful test. If upstairs facilities struggle while downstairs works, that points to a blockage inside the home. A clear drain or sewer access point outside points the same way.

Stop flushing while you check. Each flush adds more water, and that water has nowhere to go. Use a toilet plunger with steady pushes, and keep the room tidy and dry around the bowl.

This guide gives no advice on drain chemicals. Nevertheless, if you choose a product, follow the maker's label exactly. The blocked toilet service page explains what an engineer can do when a plunger fails.

Why one toilet blocks

A blocked toilet often has a simple cause. For example, too much paper, a wipe or a sanitary item can catch in the bend. As the cause sits close to the bowl, the fault usually stays local.

A repeat blockage is different, as it can point to a problem further down the pipe. Additionally, roots, a cracked section or a build-up of grime can all narrow the run. If the same toilet blocks again and again, a camera check shows what a plunger cannot.

Signs that make it an emergency

Some signs mean you should treat the problem as urgent, although one alone may not prove it. Look for any of these:

  • Dirty water or sewage coming up through a sink, bath, shower or floor drain
  • Several fixtures slow or blocked at the same time
  • A toilet that overflows and keeps rising
  • A manhole or outside gully that overflows
  • A neighbour with the same problem

Thames Water explains why this happens. Specifically, when waste water cannot flow away, it can come back up from the toilet or sink and flood the home. For a longer list of warning signs, see the guide to signs of a blocked drain.

What to do if sewage is coming up

First, stop using water in the house, as every drop you add can end up on the floor. That means no flushing, no washing machine and no dishwasher.

Moreover, protect your health. Thames Water's sewer flooding guide says to avoid contact with the flooded area and keep children and pets away. It also says to wash your hands often, clean your shoes with a mild disinfectant and throw away any food the water touched.

Take photos if it is safe to do so, since the water level can drop before anyone arrives. Thames Water also says to tell your insurer about sewer flooding, since staying silent could breach your policy. The emergency drain problems checklist covers the same steps in more detail.

Who owns the blocked pipe

Ownership decides who you contact, because each owner fixes a different part of the system. Thames Water says a blockage may be the owner's job if only one home has problems, the drain is not shared, and there is no flooding nearby. It may be Thames Water's job if the problem lies outside your boundary or more than one property is affected.

Thames Water is the sewerage company for most of the area this site covers. However, you should check your own address with your sewerage company before you report anything.

What not to flush

Most toilet blockages start with something that should have gone in the bin. Thames Water says to flush only pee, poo and toilet paper, and it lists wet wipes, period products, nappies, cotton wool, dental floss and hair as bin items.

It also says wipes labelled flushable still block pipes. As a result, a bin beside the toilet is the cheapest prevention you can buy.

Help in your town

Your town page is a good starting point. If you are in Aldershot, the blocked drain help in Aldershot page explains what to send in a request. In Camberley, the emergency drain services page for Camberley covers urgent faults. For Ash Vale, see blocked drain help in Ash Vale.

The emergency drain services page and the blocked drains page list what each kind of request covers. A sewage fault has its own page for sewage emergencies.

When to send a request

Send a request through the contact page if a plunger does not clear the toilet or if waste water is coming up. Mark the request urgent when sewage is inside the house, because that is the clearest sign of a serious fault. You can send a request 24/7, but this site cannot promise when anyone will arrive.

The site passes the request on so an engineer can respond. The engineer who takes your job runs a separate business, so the engineer sets the price and the arrival time. Ask for a written quote before work starts.
